You are here ... What's the Secret to a Beautiful Complexion? (Article)

What is the secret to a beautiful complexion?

The secret to beautiful skin? It's not really as cosmic or novel as you may think. Our opinion? Proper skincare. Many people take their skin for granted forgetting that it has several very basic needs - cleansing, hydration, nutrition, and protection.

Beautiful skin begins with a healthy diet. Proper nutrition with adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals, and proteins, and especially water help sustain our body's first line of defense against the elements. Taking multi-vitamins rich in anti-oxidants, reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, and limiting exposure to the sun are all ways you can help support healthy skin. Sun damage and poor nutrition are the surest ways to speed up the aging process.

So you're taking care of your skin from the inside, protecting it from environmental insults, getting your beauty sleep, what's next? Develop a regular facial care routine.

Here are some steps you should include in your daily routine:

Cleansing: If you wear makeup, this is a very important step. Cleansing removes makeup, oil, and environmental grime that can accumulate throughout the day clogging pores. Never go to bed without removing your makeup. Skin needs to breathe overnight and allow skin cells to shed. Makeup prevents this which may cause blemishes. Use warm water, never hot, when cleansing, and pat dry gently instead of rubbing with a towel.

Toning: Toners actually remove all residual traces of dirt, makeup, or even cleanser that remain after washing. Use your toner immediately after cleansing by applying with a cotton ball or pad. Pay special attention to the crevices around your nose and chin where you may have missed with your cleanser.

Moisturizing: This is the most important step in keeping skin smooth and supple. Facial skin is the most exposed area of your body. It deals with the effects of sun, wind, and environmental pollutants such as smoke. It also responds directly to changing hormonal levels and stress. A good facial moisturizer is designed to form a protective film over the skin to contain and augment natural moisture.

Sample Morning Regimen:

Sample Evening Regimen:

  • This begins much as your morning routine did with cleansing using Shealoe Creme or Aloe Facial Cleanser. You can also use our Calendula Tea Makeup Remover.
Apply a toner to restore skin pH and remove any residual dirt or cleanser.
  • While skin is still wet is the best time to exfoliate to remove any debris that may be blocking your pores and dulling your complexion. We suggest you do this once or twice per week using our Satin Pumpkin Scrub. Massage gently and rinse well.
  • Apply your choice of moisturizer paying particular attention to the delicate eye area.

Some things to consider on a weekly basis:

Exfoliation- A gentle scrub such as our Satin Pumpkin Scrub or Rose Radiance will help remove dead skin cells, and pore blockages allowing skincare products to work more effectively. Exfoliating can also significantly brighten the appearance of your skin giving it a healthy glow. Deep cleanse with our Botanical Clay Facial Mask or Ice Princess to tone, revitalize, and remove impurities and excess oils.

Remember: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize, Hydrate, and Protect for a beautiful complexion.
